Grown in the water,
born soaking wet,
I am a creature
of the sea.
Unknowingly,
I bear a secret,
encoded into each
cell and sinew,
fibrous, reaching
for looped anchors
on the moorings
of what it is
to simply be.
We gasp after breaching.
But, is it mere hunger to breathe?
Or is it the shock and surprise
of a fish thrown to land
by the unforgiving sea?
Perhaps
I’m suffocating slowly,
but the Secret
is right there
in the sand
beneath my cheek.
