Calloused

Draw a silvered blade
across your palms
and cut out the callous
where the ropes had gone.

Wash the wounds
and cover the bones
with a gut-stitched “X,”
so that you will know
where you clenched the ropes
for far too long.

But,
you beautiful soul,
look at my hands
(such pain they’ve known)
and you will see
that I, too,

bled on the ropes
before I moved along.

Palm-to-palm,
hold my hand,
these scars feel,
those scars know,
that the ‘ever-scarred
are never alone.
