Little Bird

Take care, little bird,
for I fear the eagles
have heard you fluttering
against this feeble wind.

Here, once again,
their talons will tear
away ribbons and feathers,
wishes, dreams, gilded treasures,
and your greatest pleasures,
no matter how much it seems

unfair.

Does the sun,
unmerciful and shining,
hunt away, on high,
as it sends eagle shadows
to haunt the earth?

Or is this the storm,
tearing you asunder
by gale, raging weather,
lightning, or thunder?

No matter,
the thin air will rain red
from the careless journeys
of little birds, unworried
and hurriedly hurtling
into the ether
for their virgin

wandering.
