The Paper Kite

I climbed that hill too soon,
step-by-step, to a greater height.

A frozen wind caught my coat
and carried me away,

like a paper kite.

…and I could see the world
passing beneath me.

…and I could hear the roar
of the shining seas.

Against a brilliant blue backdrop,
I was free and flying,
peacefully.

I’m sleepily gliding,
adrift into the faraway.
I can can count each crystal memory,
as they drift slowly past my face.

…and I could see the world,
slowly receding.

…and I heard the call of crows,
endlessly pleading.

Against the midnight blackness
of the distant deep,

I was free
and flying,

wistfully.

“Don’t take the easy way,”

the black bird said,

“you know the sound a heart makes
when breaking.”

So, in a wide arc,
I turned around and fled.
The stars against my cheeks
are taking me

back to home and healing.

I resolved to choose the simple thing.
I resolved to choose merely breathing.

I’m slowly floating home,
tired and falling asleep.
But, I am still thinking
about the warmth of good things.

This feeling is new to me.

I’m no longer freezing.

I’m no longer freezing…

A lyrical poem about a lost decade in my life. I’m lucky to be here, but I chose life. Don’t give up.

I’ll post the song version once I’ve worked it out.

  1. Beautiful. I needed something like this today. Thank you. And I’m immensely glad you chose life. The world would be sorely lacking without you. 💜
